Litter fall , Fine Root Biomass and Soil Nutrient Returns in Van Panchayat Forest of Uttarakhand

چکیده
The litter fall and fine root biomass is needed to quantify the annual return of elements and organic matter to the soil. The tree species that covers the largest area in the present studied community managed forest are the common banj oak and chir pine. The mean annual litter fall in Anriyakot Van Panchayat forest was 6.25±0.26 t ha. The mean litter fall value was higher in the summer season (2.86±0.39 t ha) and minimum in winter season (1.53±0.04 t ha). The soil organic carbon percentage of the Anriyakot Van Panchayat ranged from 1.00±0.29% to 2.73±0.51%. The total fine root biomass ranged from 4.33 t ha -1 to 6.65 t ha . The fine root biomass was higher during the rainy season (59.2%) followed by summer and winter seasons (26% and 14.8%, respectively). Soil organic carbon percent ranged from 1.00±0.29 to 2.73±0.51%. Fine root and litter fall affect the levels of nutrient returns in soil and acts as a medium for transfer of atmospheric carbon into the soil in the form of carbon containing compounds.

Linking spatial patterns of leaf litterfall and soil nutrients in a tropical forest: a neighborhood approach.
Leaf litter represents an important link between tree community composition, forest productivity and biomass, and ecosystem processes. In forests, the spatial distribution of trees and species-specific differences in leaf litter production and quality are likely to cause spatial heterogeneity in nutrient returns to the forest floor and, therefore, in the redistribution of soil nutrients. Using ...
متن کاملExperimental litterfall manipulation drives large and rapid changes in soil carbon cycling in a wet tropical forest.
Global changes such as variations in plant net primary production are likely to drive shifts in leaf litterfall inputs to forest soils, but the effects of such changes on soil carbon (C) cycling and storage remain largely unknown, especially in C-rich tropical forest ecosystems. We initiated a leaf litterfall manipulation experiment in a tropical rain forest in Costa Rica to test the sensitivit...
متن کاملPotassium, phosphorus, or nitrogen limit root allocation, tree growth, or litter production in a lowland tropical forest.
We maintained a factorial nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) addition experiment for 11 years in a humid lowland forest growing on a relatively fertile soil in Panama to evaluate potential nutrient limitation of tree growth rates, fine-litter production, and fine-root biomass. We replicated the eight factorial treatments four times using 32 plots of 40 x 40 m each. The addition of ...
متن کاملEstimated carbon residence times in three forest ecosystems of eastern China: Applications of probabilistic inversion
[1] Carbon residence time is one critical parameter for predicting future land carbon sink dynamics but has not been well quantified for many plant and soil pools. This study applied a probabilistic inverse analysis of multiple observations to estimate mean residence times of carbon among three forest ecosystems in eastern China. Three assimilation experiments were conducted with either net eco...
متن کاملThe effect of changing forest vegetation to rangeland on soil flora and fauna activities of the mountainous part of Kinj-Nowshahr
Soil flora and fauna play an important role in nutrient cycle and ecosystem sustainability. With the aim of investigating the changes in the activity of these soil organisms as a result of the change of vegetation from forest to rangeland in the mountainous regions of the north of the country, the present study was considered. For this purpose, in the Kinj region of Nowshahr, a forest habitat d...
